Quick WiFi Troubleshooting

Troubleshoot Inspire WiFi connection issues by checking the receiver’s WiFi light status and reviewing common router settings such as 2.4 GHz availability, DHCP limits, band steering, mesh networks, and WiFi passwords to restore a stable connection.

There are several reasons why your Inspire device may be unable to connect to your router. This guide will walk you through some common issues and how to resolve them.

Check the WiFi light on the receiver

Start by checking the WiFi light on the receiver, as this can help identify the problem. There are four possible states:

🟢 Solid Green

✔ Device is connected to WiFi and Inspire servers
➡ No issue with WiFi.


🟢🔴 Flashing Green & Red

✔ Connected to WiFi and servers
❗ Device is not registered

➡ Usually requires registering the device in the Inspire app.


🟢 Flashing Green

✔ Connected to WiFi
❌ Cannot reach Inspire servers

Potential Issues

  • No IP address assigned

  • Inspire servers unavailable

  • WiFi boosters or mesh networks causing issues

Less Common Causes

  • DHCP address pool full

  • Router device limit reached

  • Band steering enabled

  • Duplicate IP address


🔴 Flashing Red

❌ Device cannot connect to your WiFi

Possible Causes

  • Incorrect WiFi password

  • WiFi boosters or mesh networks causing issues

  • DHCP address pool full

  • Router device limit reached

  • 2.4 GHz WiFi not enabled or not functioning

  • Band steering enabled

  • Duplicate IP address


Run built-in diagnostics

Press and hold both keys on the receiver.

If the WiFi light flashes orange:

  1. Open the Inspire phone app

  2. Go to Menu → Diagnostics

  3. Scroll down

  4. Tap Connect under Further Diagnostics

This connects your phone directly to the unit and gives detailed error info.

If the WiFi light does not flash Orange then this is not available.


Quick Fixes

Reset Router

If your unit has previously been connected, resetting the router fixes over 80% of all problems. Remove the power from the back of the router, wait 1 minute, then power up the router again.
Wait 5 minutes the router to reboot

Reset Inspire Receiver

Switch off the power to the Inspire Receiver (this is often done by switching off the boiler), wait 1 minute, then switch back on again.


Common Issues and Solutions

No IP Address Assigned

Your router should automatically assign an IP address to the Inspire device. If it fails to do so, the device will not have internet access.

In most cases, restarting the router will resolve this issue.


Duplicate IP Address

Each device on your network must have a unique IP address. Sometimes a computer or other device may have a manually assigned IP address that conflicts with the address assigned to the Inspire device.

This conflict can prevent the Inspire device from accessing the internet.

Try restarting both the router and the Inspire device to refresh IP assignments.


Inspire Server Unavailable

Our servers have a very high uptime, but you can check their status here:


WiFi Boosters / Mesh Networks

If you are using WiFi boosters or a mesh network, ensure they are functioning correctly.

Test your internet connection by connecting a phone or laptop to:

  • Each booster

  • The main router (if WiFi enabled)

Ensure each connection provides normal internet access.

Note: If you change your WiFi password, you must reconnect all boosters to the router.


Incorrect WiFi Password

WiFi passwords are case sensitive.

Double-check that the password has been entered correctly and ensure that your phone or computer has not automatically capitalised the first letter.

The Inspire device supports the following security protocols:

  • WEP

  • WPA1

  • WPA2

  • WPA3


WiFi Name and Password Characters

When setting up your WiFi network name (SSID) and password, it is recommended to use standard letters and numbers only.


Avoid using special characters or symbols, such as emojis or unusual punctuation, as some devices may not support them correctly.


Using simple characters can help prevent compatibility issues when connecting devices to your WiFi network.


DHCP Address Pool Full

DHCP is the router's method of assigning IP addresses to devices.

Most routers allow up to 254 addresses, although some routers may be configured with fewer (for example 60).

DHCP addresses are also assigned with a lease time, which may range from one hour to several days. If the lease time is long and all addresses are in use, new devices may not be able to obtain an IP address until one becomes available.

Refer to your router manual or contact your broadband provider for details on how DHCP is configured.


Maximum Device Limits

Some routers have a hard limit on the number of devices that can connect to WiFi.

In larger properties or HMOs, this limit can sometimes be reached.

Refer to your router manual or contact your broadband provider to check whether this limit applies and how it can be adjusted.


2.4 GHz WiFi Not Enabled or Not Working

Modern routers often support multiple WiFi frequencies:

  • 2.4 GHz

  • 5 GHz

  • 6 GHz

Higher frequencies provide faster speeds but have shorter range.

Because Inspire devices use very little data and are often installed in cupboards or utility areas, range is more important than speed. For this reason, Inspire devices only support 2.4 GHz WiFi.


If the router's 2.4 GHz network is disabled or not functioning, your phone may connect successfully but the Inspire device will not.


Refer to your router manual or contact your broadband provider to ensure 2.4 GHz WiFi is enabled.


Band Steering

Band steering is a feature used by some routers to move devices from 2.4 GHz to higher frequency bands (such as 5 GHz or 6 GHz) when signal strength is strong.

While this works well for phones and laptops, it can cause problems for devices that only support 2.4 GHz, such as the Inspire thermostat.


If possible, we recommend disabling band steering, or split your your SSIDs


Refer to your router manual or contact your broadband provider for instructions.


Recommended Setup

If your router supports it, we recommend creating a separate guest network that only uses 2.4 GHz and connecting the Inspire device to that network.

This approach can resolve many common issues because:

  • The 2.4 GHz network can be easily tested with another device

  • Band steering is avoided (no 5 GHz network present)

  • Device limits shouldn't be an issue

  • The network is typically isolated from your main WiFi network, reducing potential interference from other devices

If this is not possible, then it may help to split the SSIDs, creating separate network names for each frequency.

Once the networks are split, you can connect the Inspire device directly to the 2.4 GHz network.
